Current Events:
- CCAE's top priority for the 2008 Legislative session was action on promoting energy efficiency.
- New Mexico's legislature convened on Tuesday, Jan 15th, 2008. The Governor identified energy efficiency as one of his top five priorities.
- A bill to set an Energy Resource Standard of 10% by 2020 was sponsored by House Speaker Ben Lujan and passed through the Legislature and was signed by Governor Richardson on February 27, 2008. An Energy Resource Standard is analogous to a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). New Mexico's RPS was set at 20% by 2020 during the 2007 Legislative session. The 10% Energy Resource Standard bill was also one of four bills backed by the Environmental Alliance of New Mexico in a strong partnership that conveys to the Legislature the top priorities of the entire environmental community in NM. - Other bills that CCAE supported in 2008 included:
- Weatherization and home heating assistance funding to help low-income rate payers address the high cost of heating their homes.
- Tax credits for home heating and cooling equipment. Senator Dede Feldman is sponsoring the Governor's bill, SB 35, and the companion bill is HB 216, sponsored by Rep. Bobby Gonzales.
- The Governor's Budget to support: Clean Energy Grants, development of the Green Building Design Bureau.
- A bill spearheaded by the Sierra Club, and sponsored by Sen. Pete Campos, to direct that any public buildings receiving state capital outlay funds be fifty percent more efficient than similar buildings.
