New Mexico Solar Tax Incentives are Back!

Information on how to Take Advantage of them

The New Mexico Coalition for Clean Affordable Energy (CCAE) expresses our thanks to GOVERNOR BILL RICHARDSON for his CHAMPIONSHIP OF RENEWABLE ENERGY over the years, and his crucial support this year of the SOLAR MARKET DEVELOPMENT ACT.

This new legislation, sponsored by Senator Dede Feldman, and helped by an identical bill in the House sponsored by Representative Roberto (Bobby) Gonzales, creates an income tax credit for homeowners and businesses that install solar electric and solar heating systems.

The new credits are worth 30% of the installed cost of the system, then less any applicable federal solar credits. It represents a huge boost for the develop of solar energy in New Mexico.

This legislation will save New Mexicans money on heating bills, create hundreds of jobs, reduce pollution from burning of fossil fuels, slow global warming, and decrease our dependence on foreign oil.

CCAE ALSO EXPRESSES OUR THANKS AND UTMOST GRATITUDE TO:

ALL THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATORS, on both sides of the aisle, who enthusiastically supported this legislation, and made it a reality for the citizens of New Mexico, including:

• House Speaker Ben Lujan for first introducing a solar tax credit bill in 2002, and his efforts for inclusion of this year’s bill in the Budget;
  
  
• Senator Dede Feldman for introducing the next solar tax credit bill in 2003, and for sponsoring the Solar Market Development Act this year and working for its passage;
  
  
• Representative Roberto (Bobby) Gonzales for sponsoring an identical bill in the House, both last year and this year, and working for its inclusion in the Budget;
  
  
• Senator Sue Wilson-Beffort for her wind power tax legislation in 2002, and for her efforts to ensure inclusion of the Solar Market Development Act in the Budget;
  
  
• Senators Cisneros, Feldman and Representative Gonzales for sponsoring solar tax credit bills in the past, keeping the momentum established by Speaker Lujan;
  
  
• Representative Mimi Stewart for her sponsorship leading to passage of the Clean Energy Revenue Bond Act and her strong support for a solar tax credit
  
  
• Senators Joe Carraro, John Arthur Smith and all the others for their support of this legislation.
  
  
• The Public Regulation Commission: Commissioners Ben Ray Lujan, Jason Marks, Linda Lovejoy, David King, Shirley Baca, and past Commissioners Rory McMinn, Jerome Block, and Tony Schaefer, for their crafting of and support for a Renewable Energy Standard, and the new Photovoltaic Power Buyback Program.
